Felix Holt + Brooke Sharkey – Monday 28th – @Jamboree – Limehouse
Let’s kick the week off in Limehouse, East London, where a merry sect of Balkan-minded folk musicians will be showcasing their diverse repertoires and welcoming spirit. This night is all about the kind of light-hearted chat you’d expect in a conversation with Brian Blessed, sound-tracked by anything from Folk, to Bluegrass, to Gypsy-Swing. Watch out for the performances of Felix Holt and Brooke Sharkey, two of London’s brightest up-and-coming alternative musicians.
The John Langan Band – Wednesday 30th – @Old Queens Head – Islington
For those of you unacquainted with The John Langan Band and their rip-roaring live sets, we’ll leave your imaginations to run wild with the spot on promo description of the Scottish-fronted act provided for this Wednesday’s performance at the Old Queen’s Head;
“High energy, unhinged, and musically extravagant, taking traditional acoustic idioms and delivering with punk abandonment and virtuosic flare.”
Futurism – Thursday 31st – @Bar Music Hall – Shoreditch
As vain as it is, we all love the sweet kick of satisfaction that emanates from being able to say the hallowed words “I saw them before they got big”. ‘Futurism’ is an event that’ll have you smugly relating these words to your mates ad nauseum, boasting a selection of acts on the ISM Records roster who are set to take the UK underground by storm in 2013. The retro-engineered electro pop of Plant Plants is sure to be a highlight, and it’ll most certainly be the only time you get to see the East London duo free of charge.
The 25th Hour Party – Friday 1st – @The Macbeth – Camden
Ex-Libertines drummer Gary Powell has been active on the London gig scene for quite some time now, putting his name to some of the best rock ‘n’ roll nights the capital has to offer. He’s now setting up his own event and the launch party this Friday looks like one tasty evening, juxtaposing the pissed-off yet highly-danceable sentiment of live acts Angry Vs The Bear and Eden Royals with classic indie DJ sets from Kasabian and Club NME’s Disko Stu.
Rhythm Section – Saturday 2nd – @Canavans – Peckham
Fittingly, like a weathered David Bowie in a ‘Song of Norway’ T-Shirt, we reach the pinnacle of the week’s offerings on Saturday evening. Rhythm Section is a night that breaks the mould of the capital’s House/Tech circus, boasting, well, what can only be called a refreshing humility. No judgemental hipsters or steroid-pumped satellite-town tourists can be found on Canavan’s rather unusual dancefloor. Just a kick back and enjoy the tunes atmosphere that epitomises Peckham’s burgeoning vitality and increasing importance on the London nightlife scene. Shaun P Boogie and Charlie Bones take charge of the decks…
